Overcoming the Anxiety of Running Routes

Welcome to the first post of my Neurodivergent Runner Chronicles, a series where I’ll share a personal story or insight each week about how being neurodivergent influences my running journey. The aim is to explore some of the unique challenges I face as a runner with both autism and ADHD, along with the strategies I use to manage them.

The Anxiety of Running Without a Plan

While many runners enjoy the thrill of discovering new areas on the go, I find this unpredictability incredibly anxiety-inducing. My mind tends to overthink: How far have I run? How far am I from home? Am I going in the right direction? These are the kinds of thoughts that can easily take over my run and prevent me from fully enjoying the experience.

For neurodivergent individuals like myself, the uncertainty of a route can trigger a heightened sense of anxiety. Running should feel liberating, but without a rough plan, it often feels like I’m constantly worrying about where I’m headed rather than focusing on the enjoyment of the run.

My Strategy: The Footpath App

To tackle this anxiety, I’ve found a helpful tool that allows me to enjoy my runs more fully: the Footpath app. This app has become an essential part of my running routine. It allows me to plan my routes in advance by simply drawing where I want to go on a map. Footpath calculates the distance and provides all the information I need, which gives me peace of mind and helps me feel more in control.

With the app, I can visualise my path ahead of time, which means I can focus more on the run itself rather than getting caught up in worry. Knowing exactly where I’m going allows me to explore with confidence, turning running into the therapeutic and enjoyable activity it’s meant to be.

Embracing New Ways to Explore

For those of us managing neurodivergence, small changes like planning a route in advance can make a world of difference. It’s not about limiting yourself but about finding ways to work with your brain’s needs, so you can embrace the freedom and adventure running offers.

So here’s to happy exploring—on your own terms!
