Why Behind The Smiles
The name "Behind The Smiles" reflects my journey of self-discovery and understanding as a neurodivergent individual.
Growing up, I was often described as extroverted, confident, and always smiling. My smile became my trademark, a constant that was both praised and misunderstood. What many didn't see was that my smile wasn't just an expression of happiness—it was also my armor, a way to hide my true feelings during times of nervousness, anxiety, or sadness.

From a young age, I realised that smiling could make others feel comfortable, but it also became my default response in overwhelming situations. This disconnect between my outward expression and inner emotions led to misunderstandings and challenges in social interactions. It wasn't until my diagnosis that I began to understand the deeper reasons behind my smile and the concept of masking—hiding my true feelings behind a practised expression.

Behind The Smiles is more than just a name; it represents the complexities of being neurodivergent. It’s about uncovering the realities that lie beneath the surface, breaking stereotypes, and fostering a deeper understanding of neurodiversity.

It’s a reminder that you never know what goes on behind the smiles.
